SMSF trustees have led the rise in precious metal demand in Australia over the past twenty years. Demand from this segment of the market first spiked with the onset of the Global Financial Crisis, and has only grown in the years since.
Typically, SMSF trustees are holding between 10-25% of their portfolio in precious metals, with both gold and silver highly sought after as a source of returns, with gold in particular leading markets higher since the turn of the century.
SMSF trustees are also turning to precious metals given their diversification qualities, their ability to protect against inflation, and the historically strong performance they exhibit during periods interest rates are high, which are all subjects we cover in the annual ABC Bullion SMSF investment guide.
While ABC Bullion can’t provide advice to SMSF trustees, we have engaged with tens of thousands of SMSF trustees, as well as financial planners, accountants, auditors and administrators over the past twenty years.
Based on those interactions, we believe cast bars and ABC Bullion pool allocated products (all of which can be seen below) are best suited for SMFS portfolios. We have selected these as they have the lowest trading premiums, can be easily stored, valued and audited, and are efficient to both buy and sell.
